WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MUSIC CROSSES OCEANS?
IT TAKES ROOT. IT CHANGES HANDS. AND COMES AROUND AGAIN.
Few countries outside the United States have embraced Appalachian, bluegrass, country, and old-time music as deeply as Japan. Country Soup: Americana Music Round Up celebrates this long musical connection with a multi-city tour across Japan in March 2027, bringing American and Japanese roots musicians together to perform, collaborate, teach, jam, and share music.
Country Soup includes two American bands, two Japanese bands, and featured guest artists from several generations of Japan’s roots music community—all sharing the same stage. Participating musicians include GRAMMY®-nominated, internationally touring, award-winning performers, as well as pioneering and emerging artists in Japan’s bluegrass and old-time music scene.
Created by award-winning songwriter and internationally touring roots musician Anya Hinkle, Country Soup grows out of more than a decade of her touring and collaborating with musicians in Japan. A MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting Competition and USA Songwriting Competition winner, Hinkle has performed throughout the United States, Japan, and Europe and received a 2025 National Endowment for the Arts USArtists International grant with her worldgrass trio TANASI.

THE ARTISTS
Country Soup features four bands and guest artists in various configurations—trading songs, sitting in with each other, creating something a little different at each stop.

A MUSICAL STORY MORE THAN 150 YEARS IN THE MAKING
Hinkle’s connection to Japan began with the late Sab Inoue of Bluegrass 45, the first Japanese bluegrass band to tour the U.S. on iconic American stages such as Bill Monroe’s Bean Blossom Festival and the Grand Ole Opry. In 2016, Hinkle and Inoue joined NHK broadcaster Peter Barakan for a program titled Appalachian Voice to explore the connection between Appalachia and Japan through song and storytelling. Country Soup picks up that thread.
Country Soup brings together musicians who rarely have the opportunity to gather on this scale, helping carry the special U.S. - Japan musical relationship forward. Beyond the concerts, Country Soup will offer workshops and community jam sessions that bring musicians, students, and audiences together.

根を張り、人から人へと受け継がれ、そしてまた巡ってくる。
アメリカ国外で、アパラチアン、ブルーグラス、カントリー、オールドタイム・ミュージックがこれほど深く愛されてきた国は、日本をおいてほかにほとんどありません。Country Soup: Americana Music Round Up は、この長い音楽的なつながりを祝う、2027年3月の日本各地を巡るツアーです。アメリカと日本のルーツ・ミュージシャンたちが集い、演奏し、共演し、教え、ジャムし、音楽を分かち合います。
Country Soup には、アメリカから2組、日本から2組のバンドに加え、日本のルーツ・ミュージック・シーンのさまざまな世代からゲスト・アーティストが参加し、同じステージを分かち合います。出演者には、GRAMMY®ノミネート経験を持つアーティスト、国際的に活動する受賞ミュージシャン、そして日本のブルーグラスやオールドタイム・ミュージックを切り拓いてきた先駆者から注目の若手アーティストまで、幅広い顔ぶれが揃います。
Country Soup を立ち上げたのは、受賞歴を持つソングライターで、国際的に活動するルーツ・ミュージシャン、Anya Hinkle（アーニャ・ヒンクル）。このプロジェクトは、彼女が10年以上にわたり日本をツアーし、日本のミュージシャンたちと演奏や交流を重ねてきた経験から生まれました。Hinkleは、MerleFest Chris Austin Songwriting CompetitionおよびUSA Songwriting Competitionの受賞者で、アメリカ、日本、ヨーロッパ各地で演奏。ワールドグラス・トリオTANASIとして、2025年にNational Endowment for the Arts USArtists Internationalの助成を受けています。

150年以上にわたる音楽の物語
Hinkleと日本とのつながりは、Bluegrass 45の故**Sab Inoue（井上サブ）**との出会いから始まりました。Bluegrass 45は、アメリカをツアーした最初の日本のブルーグラス・バンドで、Bill MonroeのBean Blossom FestivalやGrand Ole Opryなど、アメリカを代表するステージにも出演しました。
2016年、HinkleとInoueはNHKブロードキャスター Peter Barakan（ピーター・バラカン）とともに、Appalachian Voice と題したプログラムを開催し、歌とストーリーテリングを通してアパラチアと日本の音楽的なつながりを紹介しました。
Country Soup は、その物語の続きを紡ぎます。普段これほどの規模で一堂に会する機会のないミュージシャンたちをつなぎ、アメリカと日本の間で育まれてきた特別な音楽の物語を未来へとつないでいきます。 コンサートに加え、ワークショップやジャム・セッションも開催し、ミュージシャン、学生、観客が音楽を通して交流できる場をつくります。
